Understand developing brains.Respond differently.
Northstar NeuroCollective turns research on executive functioning, regulation and development into practical tools and learning for educators, caregivers and professionals.
A different lens changes what happens next
Understand what's underneath
Look past the behavior to the processes, demands and environments shaping it.
Turn research into practice
Developmental research, translated into strategies people can use on an ordinary Tuesday.
Build lasting capacity
Adults and young people leave with language and tools they keep using long after the session ends.
Behavior is visible. What's underneath often isn't.
What we see:
- Refusal
- Shutdown
- Impulsivity
- Unfinished work
- Emotional reaction
What we don't always see are the processes underneath:
- Working memory
- Regulation
- Cognitive flexibility
- Inhibition
- Task initiation
- Stress
- Sensory needs
- Connection
- Environment
- Belonging
When we understand what's underneath, we have more meaningful ways to respond.
How we understand the problem expands or limits meaningful solutions.
From reaction to understanding
Notice
Look beyond what's immediately visible. What behavior, challenge or pattern are we observing?
Understand
Explore what may be happening underneath: development, executive functioning, regulation, stress, environment and demands.
Respond
Choose support based on that understanding. Adjust the environment, strategy, instruction, expectation or adult response.

Bring Northstar to your communityWhat changes when we stop asking only, "How do we stop this behavior?"
and begin asking, "What might this behavior be telling us?"

Meet Kara Carwell
Psychologist. Educational leader. Founder of Northstar NeuroCollective.
Kara's career has spanned school psychology, special education and school mental-health leadership, executive functioning, professional learning and systems-level change.
In every one of those roles she met the same problem: caring adults working incredibly hard without the developmental lens that could explain what they were seeing. She created Northstar to help close that gap.
